Inner Mongolia Mobile 5G Private Network Empowers 100-Ton Autonomous Mining Truck at Huolinhe Mine
Walking into the Huolinhe South Open-Pit Coal Mine of State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) Inner Mongolia, a 136-ton-rated "giant" smoothly shuttles through the stripping face — the cab is completely empty, yet the vehicle can precisely complete the full process of loading, transport, and unloading. Recently, the AT150, China's first 100-ton-class pure electric bidirectional autonomous mining dump truck, jointly developed by SPIC and Northern Heavy Industries, was put into operation here, marking another major breakthrough for China's large-scale open-pit mining heavy-haul transport equipment in intelligence, electrification, and domestic production. As the project's core communication technology provider, Inner Mongolia Tongliao Mobile built a highly reliable 5G private network as the digital foundation for the smart operations of domestically produced heavy mining trucks.
5G Private Network: The "Nerve Center" of Autonomous Driving
Automotive wheel hub bearings ensure driving safety through micrometer-level precision, while 100-ton mining trucks rely on millisecond-level networks to ensure operational safety. Traditional public networks have coverage blind spots and latency fluctuations in mining areas, making it difficult to support unmanned heavy-haul vehicle operations. Now, autonomous mining trucks travel at high speed through the mine, and every turn, brake, and unloading operation depends on low-latency, highly reliable mobile networks for real-time control command transmission.
Addressing the complex operating environment of the Huolinhe mining area — with its rugged terrain, extreme cold, and heavy dust — Tongliao Mobile conducted specialized network planning and optimization in advance. Using multi-band converged networking and core network sinking technology, it achieved local offloading of production data, security isolation, and full 5G private network coverage across core production areas including stripping, dumping, and crushing. End-to-end latency is below 30 milliseconds, data stays within the mine, and the network can support up to 40,000 terminal connections including autonomous mining trucks and remote drill rigs.
"Relying on the high bandwidth and low latency of 5G, the mining truck's environmental perception data and driving control commands can be transmitted in real time with instant response, enabling the vehicle to operate stably even under complex road conditions," a project representative said. The 5G private network not only solved the problem of "getting connected" but also ensured stable operations through core network sinking. Production data is processed locally within the mine, reducing network latency while safeguarding mining data security.
From "Human Driving" to "Vehicle Autonomy": The Intelligent Leap in Heavy-Haul Transport
Open-pit mining coal and rock transport operations feature harsh environments, high labor intensity, and traditional manual driving models that face pain points including difficulty in recruiting personnel, high operational safety risks, and transport efficiency easily disrupted by human factors. The mining truck put into operation integrates three core technologies — pure electric drive, bidirectional travel, and autonomous driving — to specifically address the practical challenges of mine production.
With 5G private network support, the mining truck achieves full-process unmanned operations: during loading, it automatically aligns with the shovel bucket; during transport, it follows the planned path with precision; during unloading, it automatically aligns with the dump site. The bidirectional driving architecture allows the truck to travel back and forth without turning around in narrow working faces, effectively improving transfer efficiency. Pure electric power replaces diesel, further reducing the mine's carbon emissions.
Relying on integrated "5G + AI + Cloud" technical capabilities, the mining area has strengthened its safety production foundation while improving dispatch efficiency, reducing operating costs, and significantly elevating the level of production intelligence. The successful deployment of the equipment not only represents a technological breakthrough for domestically produced 100-ton pure electric bidirectional autonomous mining trucks but also fully validates the adaptability and support capability of China Mobile's 5G private network in heavy-duty industrial scenarios.
Rooted in the Grasslands: Contributing Mobile Power to Energy Base Transformation
As a communications central enterprise rooted in the grasslands, Tongliao Mobile continues to focus on the digital transformation of the energy industry, deepening the deployment of 5G industrial private networks and edge computing in mining scenarios, and developing customized communication solutions adapted to extreme cold and complex terrain environments. From the Huolinhe autonomous mining truck pilot to the intelligent upgrading of mining enterprises, 5G digital technology continues to inject new momentum into the traditional energy bases of the grasslands. This mining truck's deployment both validates the technical maturity of domestically produced large-scale mining equipment and accumulates practical reference samples for 5G private network construction and digital transformation in high-cold mining areas.
