New Energy Heavy Trucks Drive Green Transport Expansion(Sep 3)
New Energy Heavy Trucks Scale Up — Green Transportation "Circle of Friends" Continues to Expand
Inside the Zouping West Service Area on the Qingdao-Yinchuan Expressway, an electric heavy truck pulls into the charging zone. The driver unplugs two charging guns and inserts them into the truck's charging ports. Thirty minutes later, this steel behemoth completes its "recharge" and accelerates back onto the highway.
"Previously, charging an electric heavy truck from 20% to 80% took at least one hour. Now, with high-power charging equipment, it only takes half an hour," said Yan Benhui, Chairman of Shandong Expressway Zhichong Energy Investment Co., Ltd.
The efficiency improvement is driven by equipment iteration. Yan explained that as the first highway service area in Shandong Province equipped with a high-power electric heavy truck charging station, the Zouping West Service Area is fitted with four 960-kilowatt storage-charging integrated units and eight 800-ampere dual-gun supercharging terminals. Using DC parallel technology, a single parking spot can achieve megawatt-level charging power, doubling charging efficiency compared to before.
Driving 30-plus kilometers west along the Qingdao-Yinchuan Expressway, the reporter arrived at the Jinan East Service Area. Inside, solar photovoltaic panels form a "canopy" roof, providing shade for parked vehicles in the summer heat.
"These solar panels can provide approximately 10,000 kilowatt-hours of daily electricity, paired with 3.2 megawatt-hours of energy storage to guarantee nighttime power supply, basically covering the service area's electricity needs," said Liu Anyang, Business Manager at the Smart Comprehensive Energy Business Center of Shandong Expressway Energy Investment Group.
"The service area has achieved 'zero-carbon' operations and possesses the capability for 'sustainable carbon neutrality,'" Liu added. The Jinan East Service Area has built four major systems: a renewable energy utilization system, a zero-carbon smart management and control system, a waste resource recovery system, and a forestry carbon sink enhancement system. It can reduce carbon emissions by over 3,400 tons annually, far exceeding the pre-construction average of approximately 2,300 tons.
The upgrades at these two service areas are a microcosm of Shandong's broader push to make transportation infrastructure greener, smarter, and more low-carbon.
"In the highway sector, we have also completed landmark projects such as the Jinan-Qingdao Central Line Zero-Carbon Smart Expressway. In the port sector, we have built one five-star green port area and three five-star green ports at Qingdao Port, and the Weifang Port zero-carbon port area has passed certification," said Zhang Chunbo, a staff member at the Science and Education Division of the Shandong Provincial Department of Transportation. Currently, Shandong Province has achieved full coverage of charging facilities at highway service areas, and its backbone freight railway network is fully electrified.
In a logistics depot, a 49-ton heavy truck is loaded and quietly starts up, accelerating onto a special road. There is no pungent diesel smell, no exhaust from the tailpipe — only a few drops of water fall to the ground.
Hydrogen heavy trucks and the hydrogen-powered zero-carbon new route represent a green logistics experiment by the digital freight platform Fuyou Truck in Shandong. Leveraging local policy incentives for hydrogen heavy trucks and well-developed infrastructure, this approximately 450-kilometer all-hydrogen freight route has become an important link for the company's fleet traveling between Dezhou and Qingdao.
"Under the 'smart + green logistics' development framework, we have systematically established a full-chain management system of 'source decarbonization, process carbon reduction, and smart carbon control,' gradually increasing the share of green transport capacity to replace high-energy-consuming and high-emission transport, injecting new momentum into social logistics cost reduction and efficiency improvement," said Cao Huabin, Vice President of Fuyou Truck.
Promoting the scaled application of new energy heavy trucks is an effective path for achieving green and low-carbon transformation of transport modes, and a key component in driving industry development.
"Building new energy heavy truck recharging demonstration stations can directly drive investment in charging equipment, energy storage facilities, and related areas, and further unleash the consumption potential of new energy heavy trucks," said Bu Yi, Director of the Policy Research Office of the Shandong Provincial Department of Transportation. By creating strong pull on the core component industries of new energy heavy trucks, driving technology iteration and capacity upgrades, and promoting coordinated development of upstream and downstream industries, the initiative will effectively accelerate the development of the new energy heavy truck industry.
The development of green transportation extends beyond Shandong and is spreading nationwide. Hainan's Baisha Service Area has built a digital energy management platform that monitors electricity and energy usage in real time, using smart algorithms to optimize energy distribution and reduce waste. Shaanxi's Lianhuo Expressway Meixian Service Area has constructed a near-zero-energy building, simultaneously achieving full wastewater treatment and reuse, full domestic waste sorting, and expanded green space for carbon sequestration — forming a green ecological loop of energy saving, water conservation, and carbon fixation.
Looking ahead, Lu Xudong, a senior engineer at the Transport Planning and Research Institute of the Ministry of Transport, believes that the future will see the localized promotion of near-zero-carbon or zero-carbon service area construction models, strengthened zero-carbon highway transport corridor construction, and accelerated development of key standards for new energy heavy truck roadside recharging stations. "These measures will continue to push forward in the field of zero-carbon transportation infrastructure, contributing to the national greening transformation of transportation," he said.
