China's State Administration for Market Regulation (National Standards Commission) has approved and issued the mandatory national standard "Limits of Dimensions, Axle Loads and Masses for Vehicles, Trailers and Combinations of Vehicles" (GB 1589-2026), which will take effect on July 1, 2027.
The standard specifies the limits of overall dimensions, axle loads, and masses for vehicles, trailers, and vehicle combinations. The key revisions in this update include the following aspects:
Intelligent Connected Vehicle Technology Adaptation
The standard adds dimension exemption rules for perception and communication components such as radar, cameras, and V2X antennas, relaxing local protrusion dimension limits to meet the needs of vehicle blind spot monitoring, autonomous driving environment perception, vehicle-road collaboration, and beyond-visual-range safety communication.
Rationalizing Axle Load Distribution for New Energy Commercial Vehicles
The maximum allowable axle load limit for single tires on each side of a single axle has been raised from 7,000 kg to 8,000 kg, effectively alleviating the front axle overload issue caused by concentrated battery loads in new energy commercial vehicles, providing greater design flexibility for axle load distribution and structural layout of new energy models.
Energy-Efficient Vehicle Innovation
The standard adds terminology definitions for streamlined semi-tractor trucks and streamlined articulated vehicle combinations, specifying a length limit of 18.1 meters for streamlined articulated vehicle combinations, adapting to the development of low-drag energy-efficient vehicle models and supporting commercial vehicle carbon emission reduction.
Container Transport Convenience
The length limit for articulated vehicle combinations transporting 45-foot containers has been increased from 17.1 meters to 17.3 meters, while the maximum distance from the centerline of the semi-trailer's fifth wheel to the rear end of the vehicle has been standardized at 12.2 meters, improving the convenience of tractor-trailer matching and three-axle tractor selection for container transport vehicles, responding to the trend of increasing container gross mass, and balancing multimodal transport efficiency with operational convenience.
Phased Implementation Plan
To ensure effective implementation of the standard while considering preparation periods for technical modifications, cost investment, and new/old product transitions by automakers, a phased implementation plan has been established. For vehicles applying for new type approval, the standard will take effect from July 1, 2027; for vehicles that have already obtained type approval, the standard will take effect from January 1, 2028.
The publication and implementation of this standard will further regulate industry development order, effectively protect consumers' legitimate rights and interests, promote the application of new technologies that benefit transport efficiency and traffic safety on vehicles, and provide strong safeguards for people's lives and property safety.
