Smart Farm Machinery Transforms Farming(August 20)
Empowered Agricultural Machinery Debuts at Changchun Agricultural Expo, Reshaping Farming Modes
AI-empowered smart agriculture is accelerating its landing: smart agricultural machinery now features autonomous weed and pest identification, real-time operation adjustment, drone field patrol diagnostics, precision crop protection, laser weeding, and autonomous driving capabilities. These have been applied at scale in Jilin, Heilongjiang, and other regions, driving the transition of new farmers from experience-based planting to data-driven approaches.
China News Service, Changchun, August 15. Agricultural machinery that once relied on brute force is now learning to think with artificial intelligence (AI). It can not only precisely identify weeds and pests but also adjust operations in real time based on crop growth, and even operate independently in fields without human intervention.
At the 25th China Changchun International Agricultural and Food Trade Fair (hereafter Changchun Agricultural Expo), a nearly 50,000-square-meter smart agricultural machinery exhibition area gathered over 300 domestic and foreign enterprises. Reporters found that AI is rapidly transitioning from concept to concrete agricultural production scenarios. An increasing number of new farmers are no longer relying solely on traditional experience but leveraging AI, drones, and smart agricultural machinery to efficiently complete field operations.
"We are at a critical juncture where traditional and modern agriculture intersect," said Meng Fanlong, General Manager of Jilin Yunzhushou Agricultural Services Technology Co., Ltd., pointing to an agricultural drone worth millions of yuan. The device can fly continuously for 12 hours, with a theoretical maximum range equal to the distance from Changchun to Beijing. "But we sell services, not equipment. The core logic behind this is that AI-empowered new farmers hold enormous market potential."
Addressing the pain point that new farmers often lack planting experience, this model provides an end-to-end solution: after purchasing the service, drones conduct field patrol monitoring and upload crop anomaly data in real time to an AI platform for diagnosis. For complex problems, agricultural experts provide online answers, and drones are then dispatched uniformly for precision crop protection. Meng stated that over the past two years, the equipment has completed operations covering over one million mu (approximately 66,700 hectares) in Tonghua, Jilin.
Beyond aerial monitoring, AI has also given ground-level agricultural machinery sharper eyes and more precise hands. The smart laser weeder exhibited by Jilin University can instantly identify and locate weeds through machine vision, then use high-heat lasers to precisely burn them away, achieving non-contact weeding. The device supports autonomous driving and can operate around the clock. It has been applied in Ningxia, Guangdong, Jilin, Shandong, and other regions for weeding in cabbage, carrot, pepper, lily, and peony crops.
Wang Gang, a professor at the School of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at Jilin University, stated that such high-precision equipment is currently aimed primarily at high-value organic agriculture. Constrained by cost factors, this type of equipment still has some distance to go before large-scale application in staple grain production, but as the technology matures, smart equipment such as laser weeding will gradually expand to more agricultural scenarios.
Meanwhile, AI is also driving agricultural machinery from manned to autonomous operation. An unmanned agricultural machine exhibited by Changchun Sanhetong Technology Co., Ltd. can independently complete the entire field operation process after receiving task instructions, and is currently undergoing field testing at large farms in Heilongjiang. Duan Junhui, the company's Deputy General Manager, remarked: With the support of AI, agricultural machinery has become more flexible and intelligent than ever before.
