On the evening of August 26, darkness enveloped the western foothills of the Taihang Mountains. At the Tunliu interchange hub of the Taiyuan-Changzhi Expressway, the plaza of the Shanxi Transportation Control Tunliu Heavy Truck Charging Station was brightly lit, with heavy trucks entering charging bays one after another for their “nighttime refueling.” A single vehicle takes an average of 40 minutes to complete a full charge, with a range of approximately 200 kilometers after full charge.
The Taiyuan-Changzhi Expressway Tunliu interchange hub is located at the core intersection of the Erguang Expressway and the Qinglan Expressway, adjacent to National Highway G309, directly connecting Shanxi’s energy transportation trunk route. The previously idle 115,000 square meters of interchange land has been innovatively revitalized through the construction of a charging station, without adding new construction land or affecting hub functions.
Within the nearly 10,000 square meter station, 8.24MWp distributed photovoltaic panels capture sunlight and shine brightly, a 4.176MWh intelligent energy storage system charges at full capacity, six 960kW one-to-six and four 400kW fast charging piles stand ready, and 22 dedicated charging parking spaces are neatly arranged. This Shanxi’s first large-scale “PV-storage-charging” integrated heavy truck charging demonstration project has explored a new path for the value remodeling of provincial highway existing land resources.
The Tunliu Heavy Truck Charging Station was built by Shanxi Transportation Control New Energy Development Co., Ltd. Since trial operation began on April 1, the station has accumulated 9.46 million kWh of charging volume, served 46,700 heavy truck trips, and daily served an average of 270 heavy truck vehicles. Among them, the station’s distributed photovoltaic system has generated 4.9091 million kWh cumulatively, with a self-use ratio as high as 82.95%, demonstrating outstanding green electricity local consumption efficiency. The station has cumulatively reduced carbon emissions by approximately 4,894 tons, with an estimated annual carbon reduction of about 14,000 tons — the Tunliu Heavy Truck Charging Station has truly achieved efficient utilization of clean energy, writing a new chapter in Shanxi’s green logistics transformation with excellent operational data.
Wang Zhenhua, Project Manager of the Tunliu Heavy Truck Charging Station: At 8 AM, the nighttime operating fleet arrives one after another for charging. From 8 AM to 4 PM, the charging mode adopts “PV + grid power,” prioritizing the consumption of green electricity resources, combined with the advantage of low electricity prices during this period, the number of charging vehicles in the station increases significantly.
According to reports, the Tunliu Heavy Truck Charging Station has signed and bound 13 fleets totaling 195 heavy trucks. The serviced vehicles are primarily trunk-route logistics heavy trucks, with transport categories covering coal, steel, sand and gravel, and other bulk energy and construction materials. Since operation, the station’s single-day maximum charging volume reached 100,000 kWh, with single-gun maximum daily charging volume approaching 2,000 kWh, and a comprehensive utilization rate of 45%, ranking at the industry’s leading level. This further validates the correctness of the “interchange hub site selection + high-power charging + PV-storage synergy” technical route.
Late at night, heavy trucks continued to arrive for charging. Driver Li of the Changzhi Chenfeng Fleet is a local resident, transporting coal gangue from the Yuwu Coal Mine to a company in Tunliu. After parking and charging, Driver Li walked into the driver rest area. The Linfen Zero Pigeon Fleet has 24 vehicles in total, usually transporting middling coal to Anyang, Henan. Driver Nan, during the charging wait, also walked into the rest area: “Get something to eat, rest a bit, still need to drive in the middle of the night,” Driver Nan said.
Vehicle charging, people resting — the Tunliu Heavy Truck Charging Station has built a 600 square meter driver rest area, providing one-stop services including grocery shopping, hot water bathing, laundry, and comfortable rest, allowing heavy truck drivers to “charge well, eat well, take a hot shower, and sleep soundly.” The “charging + service” integration not only effectively addresses the pressing livelihood pain points of freight drivers but also further enhances the driver community’s recognition and acceptance of NEV heavy trucks.
Since the beginning of this year, Shanxi Transportation Control Group has focused on building a heavy truck charging network along highways that is “reasonably laid out, meeting demand, efficiently fast-charging, and appropriately forward-looking,” steadily advancing various tasks. It has cumulatively built and put into operation 3 heavy truck charging stations, opened 20 heavy truck charging (swapping) stations, and simultaneously launched the compilation of the “Highway ‘15th Five-Year Plan’ Electric Heavy Truck Charging and Swapping Station Development Plan,” with notable phased results.
