Three benchmark companies in the tire industry
In December 2024, S&P Dow Jones Indices, a subsidiary of S&P Global, announced the scores of the 2024 S&P Corporate Sustainability Assessment. After reviewing economic, environmental and social standards, three tire manufacturers, Pirelli, Bridgestone and Hankook Tire, were included in the latest S&P Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI).
01 Pirelli once again ranked first in the world
Pirelli's score of 84 in the 2024 S&P Corporate Sustainability Assessment is the highest score in the automotive parts and automotive industries. This score reaffirmed Pirelli's position as the world's number one in the automotive parts and automotive industries of the Dow Jones Sustainability World and European Indexes.
At the same time, Pirelli is the only tire company included in both the world and European indices, with an average score of 29 and 35 in the automotive parts and automotive industries, respectively. Pirelli has received high scores in many areas including business ethics, attention to human rights, workplace health and safety programs and policies, ESG management and supply chain classification.
In recent years, Pirelli has been committed to achieving the goal of net zero emissions in 2040 (verified by SBTi), namely low-carbon products, climate change management, environment and protection of biodiversity. Pirelli has also designed a symbol for its tires - two arrows in a circle. Tires with this symbol engraved on the sidewall indicate that the product contains at least 50% bio-based and recycled materials.
Regarding the re-winning of the Dow Jones Sustainability World and Europe Index in 2024, Pirelli's Executive Vice President said: "In 2024, Pirelli was once again confirmed as a component of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, achieving the best performance in the industry globally, which highlights the solidity of our sustainable development strategy. We are based on concrete and measurable actions, and we continue to work day after day to achieve the challenging goals we set, including the entire industry value chain."
02 Bridgestone is included in the World and Asia-Pacific Index
Bridgestone was included in the World and Asia-Pacific Index with a score of 74. It is reported that the World Index represents the top 10% of the largest 2,500 companies in the S&P Global Broad Market Index based on long-term economic, environmental and social standards.
The European and Asia-Pacific indices track the sustainability performance of the top 20% of the 600 largest companies in the S&P Global BMI in their respective regions.
03 Hankook Tire is included in the Asia-Pacific and Korea Index
Another tire manufacturer from Asia, Hankook Tire was included in the Asia-Pacific and Korea Index with a score of 78. The Korea Index includes the top 30% of the 200 largest Korean companies in the S&P Global BMI based on sustainability.
Hankook Tire is the first tire manufacturer to receive ISCC PLUS certification, and two tires in its iON series have been certified. Among them, the iON GT (available in the European market) contains 77% sustainable materials. It is reported that in order to obtain the ISCC PLUS, a strict environmental certification, it is necessary to follow the sustainable development requirements throughout the entire process from purchasing raw materials to selling products.
