China has established a full-chain industrial system for domestic green methanol fuel.
On October 21, reporters learned from the "Green and Low-Carbon" themed forum of the 2026 North Bund International Shipping Forum that nine coastal ports in China (including Hong Kong) have successively completed green methanol refueling operations. Since the beginning of this year, the Port of Shanghai has completed nearly 40,000 tons of green methanol refueling. Currently, China has established a full-chain industry system for domestically-produced green methanol fuel encompassing production, supply, storage, and refueling.
This forum was jointly organized by Shanghai Maritime University, the Asia Maritime Technology Cooperation Center, and the China Port Association, with the theme "Enhancing Global Cooperation to Advance the Systematic Transformation of Green Shipping." The forum focused on key areas such as new breakthroughs in clean energy technology, new developments in the application of digital technology, the construction of smart ports and green shipping corridors, green shipping policies and financial insurance, as well as cultivating green shipping talent, to deeply discuss strategies for accelerating green transitions in the shipping industry.
During the forum, several important outcomes were released, including the development goals and roadmap for the Shanghai Port–Hamburg Port Green Shipping Corridor, the implementation plan outline for the Shanghai Port–Melbourne Port Green Shipping Corridor, the "Global Port Green Transition Development Report (2026)," the blue paper on "Five Disruptive Transformation Trends in the Global Shipping Industry in 2026," the white paper on onboard carbon capture systems (OCCS), a 3,800-cubic-meter liquid carbon dioxide and liquefied petroleum gas transport ship, the world's largest methanol dual-fuel container ship "Oriental Wisdom," and a high-precision indoor positioning system with a personal safety perception network.
The supporting activities of the forum—Global Port Green Development Multilateral Dialogue—invited port representatives from Germany’s Hamburg Port, France’s HAROPA Port, Sweden’s Gothenburg Port, Singapore Port Authority, and the United States’ Long Beach Port to share and exchange insights on the construction and practical pathways of green fuel refueling systems at ports, as well as the roles and implementation strategies of ports in the development of green shipping corridors.
