On October 18, the comprehensive China Communications Ceremony for the 600,000 tons/year propylene oxide phase I project (300,000 tons) of China Chemical Tianchen (Quanzhou) New Materials Co., Ltd. was held. The project is located in the Nanshan area of Quangang Petrochemical Park, with a total construction period of 36 months and adopts HPPO process.
Propylene oxide using the HPPO process does not consume liquid chlorine, while epoxy from the chloroalcohol process (mainly in Shandong, 1.7 million tons/year, 1.42 tons of liquid chlorine per ton of propylene oxide) consumes liquid chlorine. The logic is already very clear. If the price of propylene oxide falls to the cost line of high-cost production capacity, the price of liquid chlorine will surely fall (propylene oxide is the second largest consumer of liquid chlorine in Shandong), which will affect the price of caustic soda.
As of June 2023, China's total propylene oxide production capacity is 5.95 million tons, while Quanzhou's production capacity, which is about to be put into production, is 300,000 tons/year. The supply is relatively large and the impact on prices will be relatively large. Source: Caustic Acid Information Network
