[Industry News]: PetroChina independently develops high-performance oilfield seals to break import dependence

On April 12, it was reported that PetroChina has recently made significant breakthroughs in the field of new materials for oilfield chemicals. The "Development of New Chemical Materials Products for Oilfield" project, led by the Petrochemical Institute and jointly promoted by Baoji Petroleum Machinery Co., Ltd.(referred to as Gemstone Machinery) and Chuanqing Drilling, has made important progress. The second topic under the project-"Development and Application of New Sealing Materials for Oilfield" has successfully developed key seals required for well control annular blowout preventers and wellhead casing heads.

These newly developed seals have undergone a strict 70MPa rated limit pressure test at Gemstone Machinery. The test results not only meet the factory standards, but also have superior performance compared to similar products. This achievement not only marks a major breakthrough for PetroChina in the field of sealing technology, but also means that it has taken solid steps in ensuring the safety of oil and gas field drilling and production.

According to the Carbon Black Industry Network, the spherical rubber core of the annular blowout preventer and the BT seal ring of the wellhead casing head are the core seals of well control and wellhead equipment, and are crucial to ensuring safe drilling and production of oil and gas fields. Previously, China's high-quality seals mainly relied on imports. In response to this situation, the project team conducted in-depth technical research on the material structure and properties, the complex stress states and failure behaviors of the product. Combined with problems arising in product forming and working conditions tests, the project team continuously optimized the formula of sealing materials, improved the skeleton structure and its combination with rubber, and the overall structural design of seals, and finally successfully developed a high-performance annular blowout preventer. It is worth mentioning that the two sealing products used in this test both used basic glue, special seal formula and advanced forming process independently developed by PetroChina. All products have been manufactured on the specially invested seal production line, which indicates that PetroChina has fully mastered the sealing technology of the entire industry chain from raw materials to production processes to product applications. This technological breakthrough not only enhances PetroChina's technical strength in the field of new chemical materials, but also reflects PetroChina's other remarkable achievement in promoting the upstream and downstream integrated joint development model.
