The Delhi High Court on Monday said the Bureau of Indian Standards on Monday said the (BIS) strictly monitors the manufacture and sale of helmets that have an impact on consumer safety. Justice Prathaba M Singh made the observations following a plea by an NGO. The NGO accused the BIS of failing to take any action on more than 14,000 complaints received so far in 2019. This highlights the alleged abuses in the manufacturing and sale of helmets. Various violations of the law.

The NGO Utprit Consumer Foundation has alleged in a petition filed by advocate Tusharr A John that the manufacture and sale of BIS head gear is not properly monitored and supervised.

After hearing brief arguments on the matter, Justice Singh said : “In view of the threat to consumer safety, it is very important that the manufacture and sale of helmets is strictly monitored and supervised.”

The court directed the BIS to look into the complaint filed by the NGO and submit a status report on the action taken by the NGO and the measures taken by the authorities to monitor and supervise the manufacture and sale of helmets. Please ensure that the ISI logo is not misused.

In the petition, the NGO argued that “very few companies and manufacturers have rampant illegal and unfair trade practices, including misrepresentation and false claims, to deceive and mislead consumers through the manufacture and sale of standard helmets.” A “manufacturing license” has been obtained.

John told the court at the hearing that some companies continued to use the ISI logo on their helmets despite having their use licenses revoked, while others used the ISII logo when producing unlicensed helmets.

He also told the court that some companies were also manufacturing products that were not BIS compliant Developing standardized helmets.

The petition reads, “By committing these illegal acts, they are endangering the lives of consumers for a meager illegal profit.”
