The vehicles within the scope of this recall may not operate smoothly because the internal components of the engine exhaust gas recirculation valve (“EGR valve”) may be corroded by a higher concentration of chlorine in the fuel. It may cause the engine to run badly, and in extreme cases, the vehicle may stall at low speed, increasing the risk of collision accidents and potential safety risks. Toyota Motor (China) Investment Co., Ltd. will replace the improved EGR valve assembly for vehicles within the scope of the recall free of charge to eliminate safety risks.
The EGR valve is one of the important parts of the exhaust gas recirculation system, which will send part of the exhaust gas from the engine back to the intake manifold and enter the cylinder again to participate in combustion together with the fresh mixture. Because the exhaust gas contains a lot of polyatomic gases such as carbon dioxide, although carbon dioxide and other gases cannot be burned, they can reduce the maximum combustion temperature of the mixture in the cylinder because of its high specific heat capacity and can absorb a large amount of heat in the combustion chamber. in order to achieve the purpose of reducing the formation of nitrogen oxides and energy saving and emission reduction.
As for the function of EGR valve, it is to control the amount of waste gas entering the intake manifold and make a certain amount of waste gas flow into the intake manifold for recirculation. And its principle is also relatively simple, popularly speaking, it is equivalent to a faucet, but the extent of opening or closing is controlled by the engine ECU computer, when the valve is opened, the exhaust gas enters the combustion chamber, when the valve is closed, the exhaust gas does not enter the combustion chamber and is discharged through the exhaust pipe. As the working process of the EGR valve is electronically controlled by ECU, it can accurately control the amount of waste gas entering the cylinder, thus reducing excessive exhaust gas into the engine and affecting the normal operation. In addition, the EGR valve generally starts to work at medium and high speed, and basically does not participate in the work at low speed or idle speed.
Failure phenomenon after EGR valve damage:
The damage of EGR valve can be divided into two categories, which are normally open and normally closed.
If the EGR is in the normally open position, the vehicle will have faults such as unstable idle speed, even flameout, increased fuel consumption, lack of power, etc., while if the EGR is in the normally closed position, the vehicle will have excessive emissions, higher exhaust temperature, shortened water temperature rise period and other fault phenomena. Whether the EGR valve is normally closed or open, the driving instrument will light the engine fault light for early warning, and the associated fault code will be stored in the engine control unit.
