The sharing of some vehicle repair and maintenance cases is updated irregularly. Let more people understand some tips in daily car use, maintenance, and testing. Use cars to understand cars better!

The 2005 BMW 3 Series with an N52 engine, which was manufactured in 2006, has traveled 16W kilometers so far. Recently, the power dropped and the engine stalled and could no longer be started. It was sent to the store for maintenance.

Link to BMW special inspection to find faults, and judge that there is a problem with the camshaft sprocket based on the obtained data.
BMW’s VANOS system (fully known as Variable Camshaft Timing Control System) is a combined hydraulic and mechanical camshaft control device controlled by the vehicle’s engine management system. It can continuously change the timing and lift of both intake and exhaust valves.

After finding the problem, we confirmed the camshaft problem and started dismantling and repairing it.
I won’t talk about how to disassemble it, but let’s see the results.

The removed camshaft intake and exhaust device can clearly see the problem: the (VANOS) screw on the engine camshaft exhaust and intake adjustment device has become loose and offset

The rotating power of the camshaft also comes from the crankshaft of the engine. Between the crankshaft and the camshaft, some engines use gears, and some use chains and sprockets to achieve transmission. The four bolts on the inlet and outlet sprocket wheels each serve to connect the camshaft and the gear.
This problem has already been solved with an improved sprocket, so you can replace it with a new one here.

The new and improved sprocket solves the bolt loosening loophole. If you want to completely solve the problem, you can only replace the assembly.
Change it!

The engine is very precise, so its disassembly and assembly becomes even more important. So don’t blindly disassemble it.
It is best to refer to the user manual for specific disassembly steps and precautions.

What tools (special tools) need to be used are described in detail. The disassembly sequence, bolt sequence, and disassembly torque.

As for the left and right division of the sprocket wheel: It is mentioned above that IN is the intake camshaft device, and EX is the exhaust device here.

Come here, that’s it!
See you next time.
