[Daily car maintenance] The starting noise is abnormal, and the timing wheel is broken! Who did this Land Rover offend?
Hello everyone, this is a column focusing on car repair and maintenance. There are car mysteries you don’t know, and it will teach you how to avoid the big pits on the road of car ownership. I believe that not only you but also many people have a certain sense of obscurity about the car aftermarket, which will help you uncover the unknown stories of car repair and maintenance.
Skywalker can be said to be a very classic model of Land Rover, and new products continue to be launched, discovered and discovered, such as Shenxing, range Rover Aurora, range Rover Sports, range Rover creation, if it is really stupid from the name alone. Fortunately, the appearance of Land Rover is still very different.
The Skywalker, who has traveled 110000 kilometers, can always hear the sound of “clatter” when it starts. With the throttle start sound will also increase the frequency, after the hot car, the sound is much lower. It is basically determined that there is something wrong with the timing system, so the sound becomes smaller after the hot car, indicating that the cause of the abnormal noise should be directly related to the oil pressure. When you think of this, you can basically judge the source of the abnormal noise, and it is very likely that there is something wrong with the timing adjustment wheel, which leads to the abnormal noise.
The timing wheel can be seen by removing the valve chamber cover, so first remove the valve chamber cover to check the status of the timing wheel. The Skywalker 2.0T engine, a major product of Ford, has also been applied to Mondeo and Volvo XC60. However, this failure rate is not a little high.
The valve cover that has been removed is covered with oil, so it can be seen that the valve cover has begun to leak slightly. The leakage problem can be solved by only changing the gasket during maintenance, and there is no need to replace the whole valve chamber cover.
The intake and exhaust timing adjustment wheel can be seen after the valve chamber cover has been removed. this 2.0T engine uses a variable intake and exhaust timing system. The internal EGR cycle can be realized, and the harmonic effect of intake and exhaust can be used to maximize engine power and minimize emissions.
In order to disassemble the timing wheel, the timing system must be involved. The timing of this 2.0T engine is a bit strange. The crankshaft is fixed before the timing wheel can be removed.
This special timing tool for the engine.
Sure enough, I found some signs of damage on the intake side of the timing wheel, which is the locking nut of the timing wheel, and now the locking nut has disappeared. After the locking nut is lost, the starting position of the variable timing wheel can not be fixed, and there is a large gap. Just like a shoe without a shoelace, the foot will move back and forth because of the gap in the shoe. The engine can not accept this kind of gap, a little gap will lead to abnormal noise when starting.
I found the timing wheel and the lock cap and spring at the bottom of the engine oil pan, which has been squeezed flat. At the moment the engine starts, the strong torque causes the lock cap between the camshaft and the Puli disc to be squashed.
The oil pump is driven by the crankshaft and transmits power through the chain, which is now used in many models.
Replace a set of timing system, including timing chain, guide rail, tensioner. Typical overhead double camshaft design, which is now adopted by most engines. Only a few American engines still use central camshafts.
Be sure to install the camshaft before installing the timing system, and the camshaft can be positioned by using a special timing tool.
The timing adjusting wheel and chain have been installed, and the timing wheel can only be replaced and cannot be repaired. And it is best to change two at the same time each time, because it will not be long before the other one will be dead, and then you have to disassemble and assemble it again, which is a waste of time.
Install the side cover, the timing side cover of this 2.0T engine made of all-aluminum alloy. Be sure to apply sealant during installation, because the timing side cover is very easy to leak oil.
In any case, it is a bit wrong for this Land Rover to have this kind of malfunction in only more than 100,000 kilometers. After all, it was a car that sold for hundreds of thousands at that time, and maybe at this moment it really answered the saying that there is at least one car at home for the people who drive the Land Rover.
