During the Volkswagen 4S maintenance in October, the operator conducted a vehicle chassis inspection while draining oil into my small ash and found that a lot of oil was thrown out around the half shaft, which was located near the side of the gearbox. After preliminary consideration, the recommended solution is to replace the inner cage sleeve.
How can the cage break? Because the cage transmits huge driving torque and is under heavy load, the smooth surface will become rough under normal wear and tear, and it will be damaged after a certain service life.
Since the labor cost of replacing cage covers in a 4S shop was expensive, I chose to go to Auto Parts City to buy accessories and replace the inner cage covers.
The accessory brand of the cage cover repair kit is Opeite, including half-shaft dust cover, fixing snap ring, and butter.
Get ready to go.
First remove the right front wheel, and then pull the half shaft out of the transmission half shaft hole. At this time, I checked the brake pads again. They were really wear-resistant. In a 150,000-kilometer car, the brake pads were still so thick.
After the half shaft is removed, the next step is to separate the flange and half shaft from the inner cage sleeve, take out the inner cage trident bearing, and remove the inner cage sleeve. It can be seen from the removed inner cage sleeve that there is slight damage, which is the reason for the leakage of butter.
The next step is to install a new inner cage cover. Connect the inner cage sleeve to the half shaft, install the inner cage trident bearing, add butter, install the flange, and tighten it with a fixing snap ring.
Success is not far away.
Next, re-install the entire halfshaft into the transmission halfshaft hole, hear a click, and install it in place. Finally, install the right front wheel and you’re done.
Finally, let’s communicate with you to judge whether the cage is damaged.
Generally, it will “click” regularly during turning or bumps, and lose power in severe cases. If there is a “click” sound during turning, it is usually the outer cage that is broken. In a few cases, the inner cage is broken; if there is a “click” sound during bumps, it is the inner cage that is broken. If the inner cage is damaged, it will sound even if it goes straight. It should be noted that in most cases of damage, the cage only clicks when the car is refueling, and rarely makes a sound when sliding. Instead of replacing the entire half shaft, you can just replace the cage. Under normal circumstances, you just need to change the cage. After the half-shaft is removed, check whether the cage is empty and whether there is any sand and dust. Depending on the situation, decide to replace the cage dust cover or replace the inner and outer cages.
