In this position, you can more clearly see that the oil traces on the inclined arm have covered the entire rubber sleeve. If you don’t look carefully, it is easy to mistake it for oil leaking from the engine to drip onto the inclined arm.
There is no choice for oil leakage from the inclined arm. There is only one solution, which is to replace it with a new one. What is very embarrassing about this BMW X6 is that the diagonal arms on both left and right sides leak oil.
Many people may think that BMW is a bit pretentious. Even the lifting arm of the chassis uses hydraulic design, and the failure rate is still so high! In fact, this diagonal stayed arm has a great reputation, and BMW can be said to have spent a lot of energy on it.
The chassis can not only transmit the feeling of the road, but also transmit the vibration. It is not a good thing for the driver to feel this vibration. The pulling arm with hydraulic device can absorb this vibration well, thereby improving comfort.
In a sense, the principle of a pulling arm with a hydraulic device is basically the same as that of a shock absorber. Both use kinetic energy to transform into internal energy to absorb vibration. But while bringing comfort, it also brings a high failure rate. Moreover, there are only two pieces in one exchange, and the maintenance cost is really not cheap.
During assembly, this diagonal arm is not as simple as direct installation as you think. The bolts of the diagonal arm can be tightened after installing the diagonal arm on the vehicle first, and then using a jack to lift the suspension to the height of the vehicle body after it normally falls to the ground. All this is done to extend the service life of the diagonal arm and prevent premature oil leakage from the hydraulic device.
As a high-end luxury model, BMW has nothing to say about its sense of luxury and control. However, it is a bit unreasonable to replace a pair of pulling arms for 100,000 kilometers, and the maintenance cost is not cheap. It shows that luxury cars are really not affordable for ordinary people.
