Radial tyre sees import surge, industry seeks anti-dumping duty
NEW DELHI:In response to the surge in imports of Truck and Bus Radial (TBR) tires (which grew by nearly 30% in the first half of this year in 2016-17) has asked the government to impose anti-dumping duty on the following products, imported from China.
TBR tire sales in India stood at Rs 8.45 lakh crore in April-September, up from Rs 6.56 lakh crore in the same period last year.
Imports of TBR tires increased from 40,000 sets in the last fiscal year to 140,000 sets this year. The Automotive Tire Manufacturers Association (ATMA) said in a statement that the growth rate was around 400% in the three years from 2013 to 2014.
ATMA President KM “The rampant import and dumping of radial tires, especially all-steel tires from China, has not abated. Imports from China on such a large scale are causing serious damage to domestic all-steel production.”
The industry said Chinese radial tire dumping has reached “unprecedented levels.”
Most of the Rs 3,500 crore new investment in the Indian tire industry over the last three to four years has been spent on setting up TBR capacity, which is seen as a growth driver for the industry, ATMA said. /p “Unfortunately, despite increasing domestic production capacity, ATV dumping has reached an all-time high. With the expansion of production capacity, the utilization of TBR capacity has declined to 60-65% from 80-85% a few years ago. The… ” Add.
ATMA said that more than 40% of TBR replacement demand is currently met through imports, while domestic capacity faces the prospect of declining utilization.
China accounted for 94% of India’s total TBR imports in 2016-17 and 40% of total TBR imports in 2013-14. 70% in 2015-90% in 2016. /PATMA said that large-scale TBR tire dumping has also negatively impacted the profits of Indian rubber growers.
The report said, “Passenger car tires are a major consumer of natural rubber in China, but domestic demand for tires has become increasingly dependent on imports, and the tire industry’s sourcing of natural rubber has been severely impacted.”
