Speaking of BMW, my feelings still stay in the E32, E34 and later E38 E39 I saw on the road when I was a child. Although I also liked the last version of the E code name of the generation headed by Bongo, it can only be said that I prefer their design. Because Chris Bangle is an American designer, he gave that generation of BMWs some subversive elements that are not German, and even looks like a muscle car to me. The lines are exaggerated and full of tension. Compared with the previous BMW, the four-eyed BMW in the 1980s and 1990s was particularly elegant and simple. When it comes to four-eye BMWs, the E32 and E34 are actually just tail models. The peak works of the real four-round light BMW are’s E30 3-Series, E28 5-Series and E24 6-Series known as “Shark nose” Shark nose. The hottest of these three cars should be the E30, but my weakness soft spot has always been the second-generation BMW 5-Series codenamed E28.

In China, I believe that the number of E28 must be much less than the W123 E-class of Mercedes-Benz in the same period, which should be rare. After all, Mercedes-Benz has been assembled in FAW CKD and W123 is notoriously reliable. E28 and I really met each other in China. The first time was when I was in middle school more than a decade ago, when I saw a red 520i in the city where I lived. At that time, I thought the car was so old but well maintained. The license plate of the first generation private car obviously belongs to the group of people who got rich first. The second time was after work, a high school classmate of mine got the M535 with a good Taiwanese appearance. (before the M5 interview in 1988, the M535 was the highest model available in the production sequence, based on the ordinary version of the 535i, the engine is M30B34, and today it should be regarded as M Performance.) I was lucky to touch it when I went to his garage. In China, it is out of luck with the old car, the cost is too high, and the scope of activities is narrowing year by year. After arriving in the United States, I have been itching to play with my favorite old car. E28 is of course one of the preferences, but the number of cars in the United States is also decreasing year by year, and the used car market has become more and more expensive in recent years. Especially on the famous economic bubble auction website Bringatrailor.com, the 535i with good quality can sell for more than $50, 000, and the 1988 M5 was sold in the range of 50, 000 to 70, 000. It can be said that it is impossible to meet one that meets your expectations.

Because of the requirements of the safety regulations at that time, the American version of E28 has lengthened the length of the front and rear bumper, and careful observation of the four-eye lights also thinks that the regulations are different from those of other countries. The one on the outside of the headlight of the previous M5 is a little bigger than the one on the inside, so the upper edge is deliberately covered by the hood, which I think is more special, while the American version is as big as four lights. Today, older cars that have been around for more than 25 years are no longer subject to these regulations, so many car owners will change their American version to an European version, including bumpers and headlights, which look more compact and compact, but these European parts are really expensive now. no, no, no.

According to the description of the seller on Ebay, this 1986 model is a first-hand car! This is enough to attract 200% of my attention. In the United States, many people drive another car in a year or two or even months (there is no shortage of such cars in China). It can be seen that the owner of this car has special feelings for her for 35 years. Looking down, the seller described that the owner was a grandfather in his 70s (no wonder) that the car had run 114000 miles (a little more than 180000 kilometers) and had been maintained in the same repair shop for 35 years. The chassis is not rusty, and the car body has some small pits hit by sand and gravel. It sounds more and more attractive. So I decided to take a shot and bid! Seven days later, the auction was over, and I was the highest bidder, so I bought myself an E28.

Here is how to pick up the car. The seller is in Idaho and I am in Michigan, with a distance of more than 2000 miles (more than 3200 kilometers). The two options are to find the transport company to bring back more than 2000 dollars in transportation costs. The advantage is to save trouble, but the hidden danger is that the whole journey is out of control. I don’t want to go by plane during the epidemic, and I checked on the Internet. Many regional flights have been cancelled, resulting in a transfer in the middle. The most compact convergence takes almost six hours. The second choice, simple and rude, drive over there and pull the car back. U-haul in the United States is equivalent to domestic goods lesbians, but labor is so precious that there is no driver to pull it for you. If you want to transport anything big, rent a truck or trailer yourself. After thinking about it, we chose the latter and took advantage of the Easter holiday to pull ourselves back and stop by Grand Teton National Park.
Here are some math problems. My 4Runner tractive force is 5000 pounds, the E28 weighs more than 3000 pounds, and the trailer that carries her is just over 2000 pounds. The 4Runner, which is still a bit close to crossing the mountain, decided to rent a car.

When the former car owner bought a car, he bought two sets of original wheel wheels, one set with summer tires and the other set with winter tires. Of course, not everything is perfect. This car still has a lot of areas to be inspected and repaired. I found many problems after walking around the community in the past two days…
First of all, BMW has no oil leakage. It has found signs of oil leakage in the oil pan and engine head. Two days ago, it was found that the oil pipeline in the front section of the oil injection nozzle was also cracked and needed to be replaced. These rubber pipes are the most fragile place for old cars. Fortunately, the car sounds healthy mechanically. Then there is a crack in the exhaust pipe. I applied it with the material sold by Auto Zone to repair the exhaust pipe, hoping that it will work temporarily. All that remains are some minor problems in the exterior and interior, such as oxidation of chrome strips on the front and rear windshield, damage to the luggage compartment and left front and rear door strips that need to be replaced, and failure of the electric lifting headrest (I have repaired this myself, and I can post some DIY repair articles later)
This is the case at present. The first task is to replace the section of the tubing where the gasoline leaked (the parts have been purchased) and then drive to a reliable repair shop that specializes in repairing old BMWs to inspect and repair other mechanical problems one by one. Keep the exterior parts and modifications yourself and slowly make them. This is the greatest joy of this Project.
