An aspirated engine, often referred to as a naturally aspirated engine, relies solely on atmospheric pressure for air intake, without the assistance of turbochargers or superchargers. In essence, it breathes air through the vehicle's air filter and air intake system, mixing the air with fuel in the combustion chamber to produce power. This contrasts with forced induction engines that use mechanical compressors to increase the amount of air entering the combustion chambers, thus producing more power from the same size engine. Naturally aspirated engines are widely appreciated for their linear power delivery and reliability, as they contain fewer moving parts and are less stressed than their turbocharged or supercharged counterparts. However, they often produce less power and torque than a similar displacement engine that uses forced induction, especially at higher altitudes where the thinner air reduces performance. Despite this, naturally aspirated engines continue to be favored in certain applications, particularly where engine simplicity and longevity are paramount.
An aspirated engine, also known as a naturally aspirated engine, is a type of engine that draws air into the combustion chamber solely through atmospheric pressure, rather than using forced induction like a turbo or supercharger. The engine breathes at atmospheric pressure and relies on this natural pressure differential to fill the combustion chamber with air. This design impacts the power, efficiency and performance of the engine.
The invention of the gas engine is attributed to multiple inventors who made pivotal contributions over the years, but it is Nicolas Léonard Sadi Carnot who laid the theoretical foundations for the gas engine in the early 19th century. However, the first practical and operational gas engine was created by Étienne Lenoir in 1860. His engine was a single-cylinder, two-stroke engine that was initially powered by illuminating gas. Following Lenoir, Nikolaus Otto made significant improvements with the development of the four-stroke engine in 1876, also known as the Otto cycle, which became the blueprint for most modern internal combustion engines. These developments paved the way for the widespread use of gas engines in various applications, including automobiles, industrial machinery, and power generation.
The gas engine was invented by Belgian engineer Etienne Lenoir in 1859.
