To fix HDPE plastic, a plastic welding technique is typically used, which involves melting the broken pieces together. First, clean the HDPE surfaces with isopropyl alcohol to remove any contaminants. Then, using a plastic welding gun or soldering iron designed for plastic, heat the edges of the crack or break until they become slightly molten. Apply a piece of HDPE as filler material if necessary, ensuring it also melts to create a bond. Press the pieces together gently but firmly until they cool and solidify, ensuring a strong repair. For larger repairs, reinforcing mesh might be applied during the welding process to enhance the strength of the bond. Always work in a well-ventilated area and wear protective gear to avoid inhaling fumes.
Titanium (Ti) has a hexagonal close-packed (HCP) crystal structure. In this arrangement, each atom is in contact with twelve neighboring atoms - six in the same plane, three above, and three below. This structure leads to high strength and corrosion resistance which makes titanium very useful in many applications like in the aerospace and medical industries. The HCP structure of Ti has two important directional indices, known as the "a" direction (along the hexagonal plane) and the "c" direction (along the height of the hexagon). The a/c ratio, which is the ratio of the hexagonal plane diameter to its height, is important in determining the mechanical properties of Ti and its alloys.
High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is a popular material used in various applications due to its high strength-to-density ratio. However, it has some disadvantages. First, HDPE is susceptible to stress cracking when exposed to certain chemicals and harsh environmental conditions. Second, while it is more durable than other plastics, HDPE is not biodegradable, posing long-term environmental hazards. Third, it has a relatively low melting point (120 to 180 °C), limiting its use in high-temperature applications. Finally, recycling HDPE can be challenging due to its resistance to degradation, contributing to waste management issues.
