Engine idling refers to running a vehicle's engine when the vehicle is not in motion. Most modern gasoline vehicles are designed to run on regular unleaded fuel, which typically ranges from 87 to 91 octane, depending on the country. An 88 octane gas falls within this range, making it suitable for a wide variety of vehicles. This includes most cars, SUVs, and light trucks built in the last two decades, especially those designed for the North American market where 87 octane is common. However, high-performance or luxury vehicles might require premium fuel (91 octane or higher) to deliver their optimal performance and efficiency. For these vehicles, using 88 octane gas could potentially result in lower performance or efficiency. It's important to consult your owner's manual to determine the correct fuel type for your vehicle. In general, using 88 octane gas in a vehicle designed for regular unleaded fuel should not cause any issues and can be a cost-effective choice.
Vehicles with 88 Flex typically use high octane gas fuel or vehicles fueled with E15 15% ethanol blended fuel. Ford. GM. Chrysler. and other manufacturers may produce many of these cars. trucks. and SUVs. To determine if a vehicle's octane rating is 88. check the vehicle's owner's manual or contact the manufacturer. In high-performance vehicles that run on low-octane fuel. the engine may knock or damage.
Revving the engine in the donor car during a jump-start can potentially help, but it's not strictly necessary. The key idea behind a jump-start is to use the working battery in the donor car to provide enough power to turn over the engine in the car with the dead battery. Revving increases the alternator's output, thus supplying more electrical power to the dead battery. However, modern alternators operate efficiently across a broad RPM range, implying revving might not significantly speed up the process. A stable idle should suffice to charge the dead battery, although slightly increasing RPMs can help in cold weather or if the battery is severely depleted. Always follow safe procedures and check the vehicle’s manual for specific recommendations.
