Splay in injection molding, also known as silver streaks, is a common defect characterized by silvery or glossy streaks appearing on the surface of molded parts. It can be caused by several factors: moisture in the resin, excessive shear heat during injection, or the presence of foreign particles. Moisture in the plastic resin vaporizes under the high-temperature conditions of molding, leading to the formation of voids or streaks on the product's surface. Additionally, when the molten plastic is injected too quickly or through narrow gates, excessive shear heat can be generated, causing the material's degradation, which then manifests as splay. Lastly, impurities in the resin, such as dust or other contaminants, can also lead to splay by disrupting the uniform flow of the material during injection. To mitigate this issue, procedures such as pre-drying the resin, optimizing injection parameters, and ensuring the cleanliness of the resin can be effective.
