Yes, low fuel can sometimes cause the check engine light to come on. However, it's generally not the low fuel level itself that triggers the light, but issues related to the fuel system. For example, if your fuel level is extremely low, sediment and debris that has settled at the bottom of your fuel tank could get sucked into the fuel system and cause a blockage, which may in turn trigger the check engine light. In addition, issues with your fuel cap, fuel injectors, or fuel pump could all potentially cause the check engine light to come on. Therefore, while not common, it's possible for a low fuel level to indirectly cause your check engine light to come on.
