Compression Ignition (CI) Engine, also known as a diesel engine, works on the fundamental principle of Diesel Cycle invented by Rudolf Diesel. Here's a simple explanation of how the CI engine works:
1. Intake Stroke: The intake valve opens, and fresh air (no fuel) is drawn into the cylinder through the intake manifold, while the piston moves from Top Dead Center (TDC) to Bottom Dead Center (BDC).
2. Compression Stroke: The intake valve closes and the piston moves back up the cylinder, compressing the air. This compression significantly raises the temperature of the air within the cylinder.
3. Ignition Stroke: At the end of the compression stroke, fuel is injected into the combustion chamber. The hot compressed air provides the energy for the diesel fuel to ignite. There is no spark plug in a diesel engine.
4. Power Stroke: The ignition of the fuel pushes the piston back down the cylinder, coupling power to the crankshaft.
5. Exhaust Stroke: The exhaust valve opens and the piston pushes the burnt gases out of the cylinder.
The key difference between CI engines and other types (like petrol engines) is in how the fuel is ignited. In a CI engine, the fuel-air mixture is ignited by the heat generated due to the high compression in the cylinder. The ignition process in diesel engines does not require an outside ignition source, such as spark plugs in gasoline engines. This system allows the CI engine to have higher thermal efficiency and better fuel economy.
Engine lugging occurs when the engine operates below its optimal speed range, typically under heavy load and at low RPMs. This condition forces the engine to work harder than usual, often resulting in increased strain on its components, causing vibration, knocking sounds, and potential long-term damage. Lugging can notably reduce the engine's efficiency and lifespan, and it's usually a result of improper gear selection in manual transmissions or problematic automatic transmission behavior. To avoid lugging, it's advisable to downshift to a lower gear when you notice the engine struggling, ensuring it runs within a power band where it can operate efficiently and smoothly. This not only enhances vehicle performance but also contributes to the engine's longevity.
