Air and fuel mixture enters each cylinder during the intake phase. This mixture is then compressed by the upward movement of the piston. Spark plugs ignite the compressed mixture, causing an explosion. The force from this explosion drives the piston downward, which, in turn, rotates the crankshaft and produces the power needed to propel the aircraft. The radial configuration allows for efficient cooling, as each cylinder is exposed to airflow, a critical advantage in early aircraft designs without sophisticated cooling systems. Radial engines were once prevalent in military and commercial aircraft due to their reliability and power-to-weight ratio.
