Sir Frank Whittle (1907-1996) was a British aerospace engineer, inventor, and pioneer of jet propulsion technology. Born in Coventry on June 1, 1907. He joined the Royal Air Force in 1923 and studied at Cranwell Air Force College. In 1928, he published his first paper on gas turbines and jet reaction aircraft, proposing the basic formula of jet thermodynamics.
Obtained a patent for turbojet engine design in 1930. From 1937 to 1944, he served as chief engineer of the British Jet Power Company Limited. The single-rotor turbojet engine developed by Whittle successfully operated for the first time on April 12, 1937. In May 1941, the Gloucester E-28/39 aircraft equipped with the W-1 engine designed by Whittle successfully made a test flight.
Jet fighters such as the "Meteor" and "Vampire" used by Britain in the late World War II and post-war periods were all developed on the basis of this aircraft. In the early 1950s, the world's first turboprop passenger aircraft "Viscount" and the first turbojet passenger aircraft "Comet" were developed successively, making Britain's aviation jet propulsion technology once the world leader. In 1948 Whittle was awarded the rank of Brigadier General in the Air Force and a knighthood.
The primary distinction between an engine and a motor lies in their operation and power source. An engine typically converts chemical energy from fuels (like gasoline, diesel) into mechanical energy through combustion, making it integral to vehicles and machinery that require combustion to operate. On the other hand, a motor usually refers to a device that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy, leveraging electromagnetic principles. Motors are widely used in applications ranging from household appliances to electric vehicles. While "engine" commonly describes systems relying on internal combustion, "motor" is a broader term, encompassing devices that drive electric or mechanical systems, regardless of the energy source. This difference has implications for efficiency, environmental impact, and application suitability, influencing choices in transportation, industry, and technology design.
An engine starter. also known as a self-starter. is a motor that initiates the combustion process of a vehicle's engine. When the ignition key or button is turned on. an electrical pulse is sent from the battery to an electromagnetic switch called the ignition solenoid. which then sends current to the starter motor. This activates a small gear inside. connected to a larger gear flywheel on the engine. As the pinion gear rotates. it turns the flywheel and starts the movement of the crankshaft. The pistons in the engine begin to move up and down. creating suction that draws in air and fuel. When ignited by the spark plug. this mixture fires the engine and begins combustion. After driving. when the key or button is released. current to the solenoid and starter motor is cut off. The pinion gear retracts from the flywheel and allows for independent control of speed and prevents stalling.
