In 1791. William Gregor. a minister and amateur geologist stumbled upon a new element in minerals found in Cornwall. England. While exploring a stream. he noticed black sand that was attracted to magnets. This piqued his interest and led him to conduct further analysis on the sand. He discovered two metal oxides: iron oxide and white metal oxide. Although he was unable to identify the latter. he was able to deduce some of its properties. Gregor presented his findings at the Royal Geological Society of Cornwall and published them in Crell’s Annalen. a German scientific journal. Four years later. in 1795. Martin Heinrich Klaproth rediscovered the same oxides in a sample of Hungarian rutile. He confirmed it was the same as Gregor’s discovery and named it titanium after Titan. the son of the Earth goddess in Greek mythology. It wasn’t until much later. in 1910. that American chemist Matthew A. Hunter successfully produced pure titanium.

Titanium oxide can refer to a compound made up of titanium and oxygen. but it can also have varied meanings. In contrast. titanium dioxide is unambiguously known as TiO2. a commonly used form. This form has excellent UV-absorbing properties and is utilized in the production of pigments. sunscreen formulations. and environmental catalysts. It is important to distinguish between titanium dioxide and other forms of titanium oxide such as TiO or Ti2O3 as they have different oxygen levels. physical characteristics. and uses. The term titanium dioxide ensures precision and avoids any confusion that may arise when discussing the material’s chemical composition. applications. or health and safety considerations.

Q
is titanium dioxide in deodorant

Release Time:

Yes, titanium dioxide can be found in various deodorants and other personal care products. As a naturally occurring mineral, it is utilized primarily for its whitening effects, making deodorants more visually appealing. Additionally, in powdered form, it can act as an absorbent. However, its use has sparked debates regarding health and safety. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies it as a possible human carcinogen when inhaled in powder form, though this pertains mostly to occupational exposure. Despite this, it is generally considered safe for use in skincare and cosmetic products by regulatory bodies like the FDA and the European Commission, provided it is not in inhalable form. Consumers concerned about its presence can look for natural or titanium dioxide-free products as alternatives.

Q
is zircon indestructible

Release Time:
July 2, 2024, 7:56 AM
Zircon is not indestructible, but it is highly durable. Measured at 7.5 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, zircon withstands scratches and daily wear better than some other gemstones. However, it’s not as hard as diamonds, which score a 10 on the same scale, making them practically indestructible in comparison. Zircon’s durability is impacted by its brittleness; it can chip or crack if subjected to harsh impacts or pressure. Care should be taken when wearing zircon jewelry to avoid rough handling. Despite this, with proper care, zircon can last for generations, retaining its beauty and radiance.
