Q
how to free up a seized engine
EarlLamb
MartinaAdams
Release Time:
July 5, 2024, 8:45 AM
A seized engine occurs when its internal components are immobilized due to a lack of oil, overheating, or rust, among other causes. To free it, start by ensuring the engine is cool. Remove the spark plugs and pour a penetrating oil or a mixture of automatic transmission fluid (ATF) and acetone into the cylinders. Allow it to soak for several days to penetrate and lubricate the piston rings. Try manually turning the engine using a breaker bar attached to the crankshaft pulley. If it doesn’t budge, additional soaking and repeated attempts may be necessary. In cases of severe seizure due to rust or extensive damage, disassembly and mechanical intervention could be required. Always consult a professional if in doubt, as improper techniques can cause further damage. This method is often a last resort but can be effective for moderately seized engines.

Q
how to find compression ratio of assembled engine
ClaireMichelson

Release Time:
July 5, 2024, 4:49 AM
To find the compression ratio (CR) of an assembled engine without disassembly involves a more indirect but effective method. Begin with removing a spark plug and sealing a compression gauge into the plug hole. Then, crank the engine and record the highest reading on the gauge. This gives you the “compression pressure.” For accuracy, perform the test on all cylinders and average the results. However, this number alone doesn’t give you the CR; it needs interpretation. Generally, engines with a high CR will produce higher compression pressures, assuming the engine is healthy and all variables are consistent. Compare your readings to known compression pressures for engines with established CRs. While not exact, engines of similar designs and sizes will have comparable pressures for given ratios. Additionally, consult the service manual for your specific engine model, as it may provide information on expected compression pressures or methods to estimate CR based on these p...

Q
can i add coolant while engine is running
ArnoBryan
MartinaAdams
Release Time:
July 1, 2024, 3:54 AM
Yes, you can add coolant to the vehicle while the engine is running; however, it’s important to do so with caution. Operating vehicles typically have the cooling system under pressure, and opening the radiator cap or coolant reservoir while the engine is hot can lead to dangerous steam and hot coolant eruptions. It’s safer to top off the coolant through the expansion tank, provided it’s a part of your car’s design, rather than directly into the radiator. Always ensure the engine is not overheated before proceeding. Ideally, add coolant when the engine is warm but not hot, to avoid thermal shock and potential damage to the engine components. Moreover, this practice can help prevent air pockets in the cooling system. Regularly check coolant levels and maintain them within recommended limits to ensure optimal engine performance and longevity.

Q
what are articulated vehicles
RonHewlett
MartinaAdams
Release Time:
June 29, 2024, 11:12 AM
Articulated vehicles are vehicles that are made from multiple separate sections connected by a joint or pivot, allowing the vehicle to turn in a tighter space than a rigid vehicle of the same size. These sections can move independently. Examples of articulated vehicles include articulated buses, articulated trucks, and some types of construction vehicles such as articulated dump trucks.
