To calculate the engine compression ratio (CR), you need two key volumes: the cylinder volume when the piston is at the bottom of its stroke (bottom dead center, BDC) plus the combustion chamber volume (V_total), and the combustion chamber volume alone when the piston is at the top of its stroke (top dead center, TDC) (V_clearance). The formula is CR = V_total / V_clearance. V_total combines the swept volume (the cylinder volume that the piston moves through from TDC to BDC) with the combustion chamber volume at TDC. To get accurate measurements, you might need to consult your engine’s specifications or measure directly if you’re doing modifications. This ratio is crucial as it affects engine efficiency, power, and fuel requirements. Higher ratios mean more power but require higher octane fuel to avoid knocking. Calculating your engine’s compression ratio is essential for diagnosing engine issues or planning upgrades.
