NEW DELHI: ISIHMAAA industrial body has said that limiting GST on helmets below 18% will hurt the industry and jeopardize the safety of two-wheeler riders as it will accelerate the sale of substandard and cheap products.

ISI Helmet Manufacturers Association (ISIHMA), an organization of organized helmet manufacturers He said that the government should provide affordable and quality helmets without GST.

Currently, helmets are subject to 12.5% 0-14.5% GST VAT (depending on the state) and MRP is reduced by 35%.

ISIHMA Chairman Rajeev Kapur said in a statement, “Helmets should not be treated like any other commodity. They have greater uses and should not be subjected to GST policies.”

Kapoor said the prices of helmets with the ISII logo will go up due to the new GST rates.

“This exaggerates the overall objective of the unorganized market and the government to set new ISII Mandatory use of ISII standards and mandatory use of ISIIISI helmets will be rejected,” he added.

The association said that despite the poor quality of helmets worn by riders, two-wheeler accidents on Indian roads have resulted in many deaths.

ISIHMA also said that many people still consider helmets a financial burden and the 18% GST rate will make it even more difficult.

Kapoor said, “It is important to not only prevent the helmet industry from going into recession, but also to keep people safe and not empty their pockets.” ‘
